Introducing ScotNorth - the only club for Arab and TB Ex Racehorses

  Introducing and Explaining ScotNorth

The Scottish & Northern Ex Racehorse Club (ScotNorth) was set up by two friends Sandra Samuels (The North) and Lisa Hamer (Scotland) .  They were both previously ''area reps'' for a UK wide club but felt that that more could be achieved in their areas by focussing on Scotland and The North, and ScotNorth was born !

The decision to form a separate club and focus on a defined area has been a very good one for ex racehorse owners in these areas - we have more events organised for ex racehorses in Scotland and The North than any other club - not only shows but clinics, racecourse parades, demos at equine events and pleasure rides to name but a few.

The Club is open to Arab and Thoroughbred ex racehorses who have raced or have been in training with a licensed trainer for 6 months or more.

Sandra and Lisa hope that by organising events for ex racehorses more people will see the potential these wonderful horses have for a second career, and that more people will consider offering an experienced home to an ex racehorse.

Their success is evident in the number of shows and events they have organised for 2008 (42 different events) and their success with some of the highest profile Unaffiliated Showing Shows in Scotland and The North in getting them to agree to hold classes for ex racehorses :-

            -    The Ultimate Showcase of Champions - Gt Yorkshire Showground

            -    The Festival of Champions - Scotland, Kingsbarn

            -    The Festival of Champions - North West England, Gt Yorkshire Showground

            -    The Festival of Champions - Midlands, Arena UK (through TARRA)

            -    Thirlestane Horse Trials - Borders, Scotland

Sandra and Lisa have 14 years' experience of re-training and re-homing ex racehorses between them, with links into many racing yards in Scotland and The North.

What does ScotNorth offer to Riding Clubs?

ScotNorth works with Riding Clubs to host in hand and ridden showing classes as well as providing rosettes for  highest placed ex racehorses in other disciplines such as dressage, showjumping and combined training.  The only stipulation is that entries to the ex racehorse classes and awards must be registered with ScotNorth.

ScotNorth provides the rosettes and can also arrange judges for the ex racehorse classes if required.  The Riding Club keeps all the entry fees from the ScotNorth restricted classes

Riding Clubs are asked to make an 'optional' payment back to ScotNorth of  £10 per class.  This is purely at the discretion of each Riding Club as we do not want any request for payment to detract clubs from hosting our classes.

Riding Club Secretaries wanting more information on hosting classes should contact us at scotnorthexracers@fsmail.net

Shows

ScotNorth works with riding clubs to host classes for registered ex racehorses, as well as providing awares for the ''highest placed'' registered horses at events.  We also hold our own 'Open' shows and host an annual Championship show, the location is alternated between Scotland (The old Lanark Racecourse) and The North (The GG Centre) to make the travelling costs fair on all members.

Clinics

We understand that ex racehorses have some rather unique issues and organise clinics for members to attend, with their horses, where the instructor is somebody who understands ex racehorses.  The clinics are extremely popular and fill up fast.

 Parades and Demo's

We orgnanise parades at race meetings - there is nothing quite like the feeling of riding your horse around the parade ring with all the racegoers admiring them and their previous trainers giving you their 'nod of approval' as they see one of their horses in the parade.

We also do parades and talks at equine events such as the Contour Equine Events at the Royal Highland Centre and the British Riding Clubs Equine Extravaganza at Oatridge - these are also great fun for the proud ex racehorse owners are are fantastic for creating interest from potential new owners, but also showing how important it is to point out all the points that need to be considered before taking an ex racehorse.

Online Forum

We have an online forum where people can meet, chat, share photos and results, offer advice and moral support and have a giggle.  The forum is invaluable in allowing members over such a wide area to stay in touch and share their passion for ex racehorses.

Social events

Often we just organise group hacks where we can meet up and ride together without the stress of being at a show or a parade etc.   These are very relaxed and great fun.

Supporting Equine Charities

ScotNorth is a 'non profit' Club.  Each year we will give 50% of any excess funds to 2 equine charities, chosen by our members, and the rest will be retained for funding future club activities.

Accountability

Neither the founders or the Club officials receive any remuneration for their activities on behalf of the Club.

Full accounts are published annually to all registered members so they can see where the funds have been allocated.  There are also regular 'online' members meetings where all registered members have the opportunity to contribute to the running of the Club.

We are very open with members about what we do, how we do it and the financial side too.

So - if you have an ex racehorse and you like what you have seen so far then we would love to welcome you and your horse(s) to the Club.  There is a registration form below.
